 History:
1968

Alfred Bonsignore  of Oradell, New Jersey gave his testimony on Christian radio station WFME.  Bob Grant of Waldwick, N.J. was listening.  These two physically-disabled Christians shared a burden for people with disabilities, so together they formed an organization to meet the physical, spiritual and social needs of people with disabilities and called it “Overcomers” from 1 John 5:4
“…for everyone born of God overcomes the world.”

1977

The “Overcomers” was incorporated under New Jersey laws (and approved under IRS regulations) as a non-profit [501 (c) (3)] organization called “The Christian Overcomers, Inc.”  Each Board member knew Jesus Christ as their personal Savior, and had a genuine concern and commitment for people with disabilities.  That is still the case today.

The Present

Christian Overcomers continues to provide a unique opportunity through a week-long camp ministry wherein three times each year (July, August, and October), people with disabilities can retreat from their homes and enjoy outdoor activities as well as nurture and develop friendships, and hear God’s word.  The camp is held at Spruce Lake Retreat in Canadensis, Pennsylvania in the Pocono Mountains, a facility that seeks to eliminate physical barriers as they fulfill their mission to “point people to Christ”. Campers with disabilities come to camp from various states and range in age from 17 to 70+.

The participation of a full-time volunteer caregiver for each camper with a disability is vital to the safety and success of this program.  The volunteers care for and assist the campers for the duration of each camp.  These volunteers make it possible for the camp to accommodate many degrees of disabilities, including extremely challenged individuals.  The camp’s success is due in large part to the heart-felt caring and commitment of each volunteer, to fulfill our call to welcome and bless people with all types and ranges of physical disabilities.

In addition to the camps, Christian Overcomers provides coffee houses wherein music, snacks, and social interaction come together.  In addition, there is a late summer/early fall picnic, a Christmas dinner and a Spring banquet.

Individual volunteers are also interactive with numerous people with disabilities throughout the year via telephone, email, Facebook, and visits to their homes.  These volunteers also occasionally provide transportation to doctors’ visits, shopping, entertainment and lunch or dinner get-togethers.

The Reason for the Ministry:

All Christians know the reason Jesus came to earth -- To save mankind John 3:16  “For God so loved the world that he gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”

His ministry not only encompassed giving the world the Good News of the Kingdom of God, but demonstrated his love by healing people for whom He had a great heart.

Matthew 11: 5  “the blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.”

Matthew 4:24   “…people brought to Him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and He healed them.”

Our Service Volunteers:

Servant volunteers are the backbone of this ministry. They are the instruments God uses to demonstrate His love in very tangible ways. Volunteers come from almost every walk of life and serve in a wide variety of areas. Year-round volunteer support is needed for visitation, transportation assistance, retreat camps, and other social activities, as well as the ministry’s organization, itself.

The need is great, and thankfully, God has blessed this ministry with wonderful servant volunteers. Overcomers can always use volunteer help. If you have questions, or would consider volunteering and would like more information on volunteer involvement in our ministry in Northern, New Jersey  feel free to contact the office of the Christian Overcomers:

Christian Overcomers actively seeks mature Christian individuals from all walks of life - high school and college students, professionals, or retired persons in good health to assist in our ministry. In addition to “hands on” care, Christian Overcomers is looking for individuals who are willing and able to lend their professional expertise and talents to benefit the organization and our campers. Nurses, ministers, massage therapists, business persons, psychologists, attorneys, grant writers, insurance executives, bookkeepers, managers, marketing personnel, fund raisers, musicians, people with a flair for writing, – virtually anyone who has a heart for the people with disabilities – or who want to gain valuable life and work experience, are encouraged to contact Christian Overcomers at their earliest convenience. We invite you to join us in serving God’s children. If you are looking for a Christian ministry in which to serve the Lord and your fellow men and women, please contact us.
